Nirma University of Science and Technology – a premier educational institute situated on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway – has been renamed as Nirma University.
It has been done with an objective to expand its activity in the sphere of higher education beyond merely science and technology.
State Education Minister Ramanlal Vora moved the Nirma University of Science and Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2009, in the Assembly on Wednesday, which was later passed by the House.
Moving the Bill, Vora said the university was till now imparting education only in science and technology. But, with the passage of time, it now feels the need to expand its activities and introduce new courses and faculties in higher education, particularly in professional education.
Therefore, he said, it is proposed to create centres of excellence at the university so as to provide knowledge, education, training and research facilities in the field of medical, dental, paramedical, physiotherapy, pharmacy, commerce, management, humanities and other professional education-related courses.
The minister told the House that besides amending the nomenclature of the ‘Nirma University of Science and Technology’ to ‘Nirma University’, it is proposed to have the Secretary (Higher Education) on the University’s Board of Governance, instead of the Secretary (Science and Technology). It also proposed to re-designate the director of the university as the director general.
