(Reuters) - Following is the weather report detailed by India Meteorological Department.

CHIEF FEATURES

(Based on 0830 hours IST observations)

Under the influence of a western disturbance, scattered to fairly widespread precipitation is likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab during next 3-4 days. Isolated to scattered precipitation is also likely over adjoining northern plains and Uttarakhand during the above period.

Cold wave conditions have abated over northwest India and Rajasthan. The current meteorological analysis and Numerical Weather Prediction Models suggest further rise in night temperatures by

3-4°C over these regions during next 3 days. Day temperatures are also likely to fall appreciably over some parts of in the plains of northwest India and Rajasthan during next 2-3 days.

The lowest minimum temperature of 0.9°C in the plains of the country was recorded at Churu (Rajasthan).

NORTHWEST INDIA

[J & K, H. P., UTTARAKHAND, PUNJAB, HARYANA , DELHI, WEST UP] Rain/snow is likely at many places over Jammu & Kashmir; at a few places over Himachal Pradesh and isolated over Uttarakhand. Rain/thundershowers are likely at a few places over Punjab and isolated over north Haryana and Chandigarh.

EAST INDIA

[EAST UP, JHARKHAND, BIHAR, ORISSA,, WEST BENGAL & SIKKIM] Mainly dry weather is likely over the region.

NORTHEAST INDIA

[Arunachal Pradesh, NMM& T, Assam, Meghalaya,] Mainly dry weather is likely over the region.

SOUTH INDIA

[TN, AP, KERALA,, KARNATAKA, LAKSHADWEEP, ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS]

Rain /thundershowers are likely at a few places over Tamil Nadu & Puducherry and South Interior Karnataka during next 48 hours and decrease thereafter. Isolated rain/thundershowers are likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Kerala.

WEST INDIA

[GOA, MAHARASHTRA (OTHER THAN VIDARBHA), GUJARAT, RAJASTHAN] Isolated rain/thundershowers are likely over West Rajasthan. Mainly dry weather is likely over the rest region.

CENTRAL INDIA

[M.P., CHHATTISGARH, VIDARBHA] Mainly dry weather is likely over the region.

Outlook for subsequent two days from 0830 hrs IST of 8th January, 2008

(Based on numerical weather products):

Fairly widespread precipitation with isolated heavy fall is likely over Western Himalayan Region. Isolated to scattered precipitation is also likely over adjoining northern plains. Note: 'TRACE' means that rain fell but there was not enough rainfall to measure.
