AHMEDABAD: For people who get panicky at the thought of getting swine flu and not knowing it till it may get too late, there is some good news. The state government has decided to give approval to at least three private laboratories in the state, which will be qualified and equipped to test samples for H1N1 virus.
The state health department will soon issue a notification allowing the approved laboratories in other states to start authorised collection centres for H1N1 samples.
With the virus expected to spread faster during winter along with other respiratory illness, the state government officials said that planning is being done to put in place a facility where many people can be tested and taken care of if the virus spreads in the state.
Officials in the health department said that Surat deaths necessitated the opening of an H1N1 testing laboratory in New Civil Hospital there, which will be operational in two days time. Moreover, a private laboratory is also in the process of getting an approval to start testing blood samples for swine flu.
"We had inspected the laboratory and given them a list of deficiencies, which they have completed. The laboratory may get an approval in a week's time," said a senior health official.
In Ahmedabad too, inspection and capacity building process of two laboratories is on. It is required for the laboratories to have biosafety levels three.
"The tenders for ventilators have also been floated," said officials.
