A trial run of Childline’s campaign on a 1.5 km stretch brought a ray of hope for 14 child labourers who were rescued on Wednesday morning. The shocking finding emerged when the helpline, with help of Ellisbridge police, swooped down on roadside eateries, tea stalls and garages between Gujarat College and V S Hospital.

“All rescued kids are in the age-group of 10-15. This is really a grim situation because we found these children in only 1.5 km stretch. We are soon going to launch a campaign against child labour,” said Childline Assistant Director Poornima Gupta.

“Most of the children belong to Bihar, UP and Rajasthan. We have sent them to Observation Home in Khanpur,” said helpline co-ordinator Divyakant Parmar.

A 12-year-old’s sorry tale

A native of Kishanganj in Bihar, 12-year-old Mohammed Akhtar Alam came to Ahmedabad trusting his brother-in-law. “I have lost my parents. I was living with my sister. About four months, my brother-in-law Shakir Alam, who runs an eatery here, brought me on pretext of my treatment. For a few days, he did take me to V S Hospital. But all that care and affection disappeared when he forced me to work at his stall. He would not offer me food if I refuse to work,” said the boy who is suffering from heart ailment.

Not only Akhtar was forced to work, his brother-in-law did not bother to admit him to any school though he had promised to do so. “My studies have been discontinued. I was regular at school in Bihar,” said the child with a teary eyes.

“Akhtar is only one example. There are several like him who are pushed into labour on false promise of a good future,” said helpline member Narmada Vaghela.

Beware! you may be an offender
Employing a child for tiny household tasks is a punishable offence under the law. Don’t waste time to absolve yourself of the charges if you have hired a kid for your domestic jobs.

Kids employed for jobs like cleaning utensils, washing clothes, taking out pet for outing, cleaning aquarium and for washing car is against law. Anyone who wants to inform about child labour can call at Childline numbers:  1098, 26574421 and 9408704844.
