Here is something that will cheer up residents of Thaltej. In the third phase of Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), Thaltej and areas along Sardar Patel Ring Road will be connected with the main BRTS corridor. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has started studies on feasibility, locality and volume of traffic.
The 37-km stretch of BRTS in the third phase will see Thaltej joined to the BRTS route at Helmet crossroads in Memnagar. Other areas on S P Ring Road route are likely to be attached to the main corridor of BRTS.
Confirming this, Municipal Commissioner Dr Guruprasad Mohapatra told Mirror, “It’s true that in the third phase we are planning to join Thaltej with the main corridor at Helmet crossroads. For other areas on the S P Road we have been working on the traffic volume, locality, the kind of public which will use the bus and feasibility.”
The civic chief added, “Once the planning and the project is complete, we will start other things.”
Missed deadlines
Since the central government gave its go ahead for the BRTS in 2007, the different stretches of the project have been delayed for some reason or other. The 12.5-km pilot project of BRTS from RTO to Chandranagar, whose deadline was December 2008, was inaugurated in October, 2009 by Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The route was extended to Naroda, which was 30 km, and was scheduled to be completed by November 2010, but took exactly a year more to complete. The second phase that includes RTO to Vishad, Shivranjani to Bopal, Shah-e-Alam to Geeta Mandir, Odhav to Sarangpur, Ellisbridge to Kalupur, Dilli Darwaja to Kalupur, was scheduled to be completed by mid-2010, but is still at ground level. These routes are likely to be completed by end of 2012.
The third phase will have nine new routes which will include routes from Narol to Aslali ring road, Jasodanagar to Hathijan ring road, CTM- Hatkeshwar-Khokhara-New Cloth Market, Khokhra-Rakhial-Civil Hospital-Ghewar circle-Shahibaug Dafnala-Acher, Chadkheda-Zundal circle, New C G Road- Vishat Junction-IIT, Akhbarnagar-Gota,
Sola Fly-over to Science city and Shivranjani to APMC market, Sarkhej and Thaltej. As much as Rs 150 crore has been alloted in the budget proposed by the commissioner for the third phase of BRTS.
